What's Happening at Sydenham High School
Oct. 1, 2025
October is here!
After one month back, we are in full swing at SHS with so much to share.
First of all, we want to thank our community for all of your support and donations for our annual Terry Fox Run. We set a new SHS record (at least since 2001) raising over $2,600. Congratulations to Mr. Cashol's class for raising the most money this year.
The beginning of this month is full of events: Grade 9 Day, Bubba Bowl, Academic Awards, Fall Pep Rally, Field trips, Parent/Guardian night, etc. Please check below for specific details surrounding each event.
Department News - Healthy Active Living!
Every month we will be spotlighting a department in our school. This month we are highlighting our Healthy Active Living Department.
Phys.ed students are busy in their classes getting to know each other and working on cooperative games in addition to cardio exercises such as the graveyard run and making use of the spin room. Students are encouraged to set individual fitness goals, and track progress towards them.
Our Recreation Leadership class hosted our annual Northern Classic Cross Country Meet on Wednesday October 1st where over 300 elementary students came to run the challenging hills at LPS. These students also help to organize our Grade 9 Day (Oct. 3) down at the point. Thanks again to the fire department for being on hand to make this an enjoyable day for all.
Grade 9 Day - Fri. Oct. 3
This Friday, Oct. 3, 2025, our senior leaders have planned a fun day for our grade 9 students. Here is some information about the half day of fun (12 pm - 2:35 pm):
- Students will be placed in a colour house (Purple, Blue, Green or Orange) and are encouraged to wear that colour the day of Orientation.
- Students will have the choice to participate in games and challenges. Some games involve water, so be prepared that clothing/shoes could get dirty.
- The fire department is planning on attending again to run a slip n’ slide. Students have the option to slip n' slide in their clothing (no swimsuits, shirt mandatory).
- We will be feeding Grade 9’s lunch on this day courtesy of our SHSM expanded opportunities team. Students will receive a hot dog, bag of chips and a drink, while getting to learn and hear about SHSM opportunities that become available in Grade 11 and 12.
- Students who require individual accommodations or alternates to this plan can reach out to Mr. McDougall or Ms. Stevens.
Parent Guardian Night - Oct. 8
Sign up for Parent/Guardian night is now open on School-Day. You can book a 5 minute slot with your students' teachers. The evening runs from 6:30-8:30 pm. We also host another evening in the spring. If at any point, you have questions or would like a progress update, please reach out to your students' teachers by email or phoning the school.

Academic Awards
On Thursday, October 9th, 2025, we will be celebrating our 38th Annual Academic Awards Ceremony, in the gymnasium at 10:00 am. This is a very special event at which we celebrate students who have obtained Honours (80%) or Honours with Distinction (90%) standing in their previous year courses. Award winners have been sent a personal invitation to attend this year’s ceremony. You and your fellow students make events like this possible because of your academic accomplishments. We welcome yourself, fellow recipients, and your family in acknowledging your fine achievements.

Concussion Protocol
SHS is committed to student safety, injury prevention, and well-being, and supports concussion awareness, prevention, identification, management, tracking, and training. Our point of contact is Ms. Ash Ward, Vice Principal.
Our LDSB Concussion Policy/Concussion Code of Conduct is here as well to ensure we work together to support our students if a concussion is suspected or diagnosed.

Threat/Risk Assessment Notification and Process
The Limestone District School Board and community partners are committed to making our schools safe for students and staff. As a result, schools will respond to all student behaviours that pose a potential risk to other students, staff, and community members. The Community Violence Threat Risk Assessment Process is designed to be proactive in developing intervention plans that address the emotional and physical safety of those involved. Families are asked to review the steps of a Threat/Risk Assessment online.
