- Earlier this week the girls' rugby team travelled to NDSS. Over a dozen girls showed their strength and power as they played in the first rugby match of their lives! In the JR side Natalia Tippen notched the first try of her high school career. The SR Girls Rugby Team took to the pitch yesterday for their preseason tournament and showed incredible improvement throughout the day. Tenacious tackling by the likes of Lindsay Brown and Sofia Tippen set the tone for our season. In the final match Grace Allport and Katie Foley's tries helped your Golden Eagles secure a tie against Frontenac Falcons. Good luck to the JR girls as they take on LaSalle this afternoon. Dismissal time is 2pm.

- Today, March 8th is International Women’s Day. It is a global day to recognize women’s and girls’ social, economic, cultural and political achievements.International Women’s Day first took place on March 19, 1911 in Austria, Denmark, Germany and Switzerland. On that day more than a million women and men attended public events to show their support. The United Nations recognize 1975 as International Women’s Year. It was in that year that March 8th became the date the day was recognized. Currently there are 29 Countries in the world who have a female Prime Minister or President. There are many more who do not currently but have the past. Kim Campbell was Canadian Prime Minister in 1993. Please check out the map display in the Front Foyer showing these 29 Countries and their leaders. In addition, there is a display highlighting the Contributions of Canadian Women. - "November 20th is Transgender Day of Remembrance. Today is an annual observance that honors the memory of the transgender people whose lives were lost in acts of anti-transgender violence. "To mark this day SAGE would like to share with you some tips for allies of transgender people: If you don't know what pronouns to use, listen first. It's also appropriate to genuinely ask someone what their pronouns are. Don't make assumptions about a trans person's sexual orientation. Don't ask a transgender person what their "real name" is. Be patient with a person who is questioning or exploring their gender identity. Understand that there is no "right" or "wrong” way to transition and that it is different for every person. Challenge anti-transgender remarks or jokes. Be careful about confidentiality, disclosure and "outing". Listen to transgender people. Today at lunch SAGE will be giving out pronoun pins outside the Aerie for anyone who would like one. If you have any questions, would like to learn more, would like to spend time with others in the 2SLGBTQIA+ community, or would like to create events for the school regarding 2SLGBTQIA+ issues and education, please come to SAGE meetings at lunch in the Aerie on Mondays. - Ricki

- Sydenham High School offers many extra-curricular activities for students who self-identify as Indigenous. A person that self-identifies as Indigenous understands that being Indigenous is a part of their life story. This might be through family, heritage, community status, or genealogical research. Not all people who are Indigenous, identify in that way. To self-identify is a choice each person makes about how they present themselves to the world. It does not depend on the perspectives of other people or organizations, and it does not change who you are. It’s truly your choice. We look forward to offering you lots of Indigenous learning opportunities. And look forward to exploring Indigenous Ways of Knowing. - Wallace

- Today Golden Eagles, you will see many orange t-shirts around the school.Over 160,000 Indigenous youth were sent to the Canadian Residential School System. They were denied basic human rights, were separated, often permanently from their families, denied their cultural practices, and frequently given numbers rather than names. At age 6, and on her first day of Residential School, Phyllis Jack Webstad had her brand-new orange t-shirt stripped from her, never to be returned. Sydenham High School wears Orange today and any day you wish to strike up a conversation in truth and reconciliation in solidarity for the families that were forever changed missing their youth or never having come home. Tomorrow is September 30. Take a moment to think of all the people in your life who are a part of your family whether chosen or born. We wear orange for all those who didn’t have either that chance or choice. – Stevens

- Golden Eagles, we are part of Truth and Reconciliation. Call number 45 c states: renew or establish Treaty relationships based on principles of mutual recognition, mutual respect, and shared responsibility for maintaining those relationships into the future. Sydenham, Truth and Reconciliation exists for us and for now. Orange Shirt Day is also an opportunity for First Nations, local governments, schools and communities to come together in the spirit of reconciliation and hope for generations of children to come. Here at SHS, we sit on the unceded territory of the Algonquin nation and include people who are Ojibwe, Metis, Cree, Miq’mac and Mohawk alike. - This week, SHS raises awareness of the findings and calls to action of the National Truth and Reconciliation Commission. - This week, you’ll notice a new display in the Main Foyer. Consider how the shoes represent the 160,000 Indigenous children who suffered through the Residential School System, and the over 4,100 children, who died. Current estimates are that over 10,000 children never returned to their families. We participate in Truth and Reconciliation to hear their stories and honour their histories. The date of September 30th was chosen because it is the time of year in which children were taken from their homes to residential schools, and because it is an opportunity to set the stage for anti-racism and anti-bullying policies for the coming school year. It also gives teachers time to plan events that will include children, as we want to ensure that we are passing these stories and learning on to the next generations. Orange Shirt Day is also an opportunity for First Nations, local government, schools and communities to come together in the spirit of reconciliation and hope for generations of children to come. - Stevens
